About the Founder
A chance encounter on a train to Philly turned serial entrepreneur and businessman Nick Ambeliotis into a cigar aficionado after a friendly conductor gave him two cigars following a good conversation.
As the founder of Mediterra Bakehouse, a nationally acclaimed artisan bakery, as well as several European-style restaurants known as the Mediterra Cafes, Nick developed a passion for hospitality and fine foods at a young age.
His father, an immigrant from Greece, owned a specialty grocery store in Warren, Ohio. As a teenager, Nick began working with his dad, learning the ins and outs of running the market.
When Nick was in his early 30’s, divine intervention changed his career path. He met with an Orthodox monk who urged him to turn his food experience toward baking bread. Nick learned to
bake artisanal bread in Europe and moved, with his four children, into a two-bedroom apartment, selling their family home to fund the launch of his new business.
Mediterra Bakehouse launched in Pittsburgh in 2002. Twenty years later, Mediterra bread can be found in every Whole Foods market in the country and many other specialty grocery stores, restaurants, cafes, and bakeries.
Nick’s four children, Michael, Anthony, Niko, and Nicole are heavily involved in the business’ success. Together they continue to innovate and grow.
Nick attributes his success to simply tuning into and following God’s plan for his life. “There’s no way I could have achieved what I have without Him,” he says.
Why CIgars?
Although it may not be obvious, there are multiple parallels between baking bread, specialty foods, and cigars. Top-quality, artisanal bread, cheese, wine, and premium cigars are chemical-free, all-natural, and undergo a fermentation process. And they are all meant to be enjoyed, ideally with friends.
The artistry behind producing fine cigars is equivalent to the mastery behind making the best wines and cheeses.
For Nick, cigars facilitate creating community, cultivating connection, and enticing people to relax for an hour or two–forgetting everything else in the world and being truly present with one another. When enjoyed with friends, the tip of a cigar is a light in the darkness.
